Good indoor climate is essential for concentration and learning

It is known that a good indoor climate in schools is essential for both well-being, learning and health. Already as a child, the foundation for a healthy adult life is laid, and therefore the indoor climate of children deserves extra attention.

With the campaign “Indoor climate in schools”, Realdania has focused on how to improve air, sound, light, temperature and the physical environment in the country's schools. The aim is to create better learning environments, increase well-being and ensure that students can develop optimally both academically and socially.

Many of the country's schools face challenges. The older buildings are often in great need of renovation and maintenance, while in many cases the teaching rooms do not support today's teaching methods. As a result, CO2 and noise limits are often exceeded for much of the teaching time. At the same time, insufficient lighting and fluctuating temperatures are experienced, which negatively affects boat learning and well-being. In fact, 47% of use time in classrooms exceeds the CO2 limit of 1,000 ppm.

Fortunately, there are many good examples of solutions that can improve the indoor climate in schools. Realdania has gathered experiences and initiatives from municipalities and schools that can serve as inspiration. Measures range from optimised ventilation and soundproofing to improved lighting, flexible furnishing solutions and refurbishing existing buildings. These concrete examples show how both students and teachers can benefit from an improved indoor climate.

What is a good indoor climate?

A good indoor climate is traditionally judged on four parameters: air, sound, light and temperature. A fifth element is the room itself — its design and layout affect our experience of the environment and how well it supports the activities that take place.

In Realdania's example collection, 30 concrete solutions are presented, which in each way improve the indoor climate. At the same time, the collection gives a clear picture of the current situation in schools and which areas require special attention.
