World Green Building Week 2026: Building a More Sustainable Future Through Smarter Ventilation

September 22, 2026

World Green Building Week 2026, held from 7–11 September, brought the global construction industry together under the theme #BuildItReady, highlighting the importance of creating buildings that are resilient, energy-efficient and prepared for the future.

Organised by the World Green Building Council, the annual campaign encourages businesses, designers and building owners to consider how the decisions we make today can improve building performance, reduce environmental impact and support long-term sustainability.

At KE Fibertec, we believe ventilation has an important role to play in achieving these objectives. From material selection and environmental documentation to air distribution and ongoing maintenance, every stage of a ventilation system's lifecycle presents opportunities to make more informed, sustainable choices.

‍

What does it mean to #BuildItReady?

This year's campaign focused on three key principles: building resilience, improving efficiency and preparing buildings for future opportunities.

For building services engineers, these principles are particularly relevant.

Buildings must be designed to maintain comfortable and healthy indoor environments while responding to changing demands, energy costs and environmental expectations.

Ventilation is an essential part of this challenge. While providing sufficient fresh air and maintaining indoor comfort remain fundamental requirements, designers must also consider the energy needed to distribute air, the environmental impact of the materials specified and the long-term operation of the system.

A sustainable approach therefore needs to consider the complete ventilation solution rather than focusing solely on its initial installation.

‍

Understanding the environmental impact of ventilation

As the construction industry places greater emphasis on whole-life carbon assessments, access to reliable environmental data is becoming increasingly important.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide independently verified information about a product's environmental impact, allowing designers to make more informed comparisons when selecting materials and equipment.

At KE Fibertec, we provide EPD documentation for our GreenWeave and MultiWeave textile ventilation solutions.

Importantly, our environmental documentation considers the complete duct system, including the textile material, mounting components, accessories and packaging.

This distinction matters because assessing the textile material alone does not provide a complete picture of the environmental impact of the installed system.

Our project-specific EPD calculations allow consultants and contractors to obtain environmental data relevant to their particular installation, supporting whole-life carbon assessments and sustainability certification processes such as BREEAM.

By providing transparent environmental information, we aim to make it easier for our customers to understand the impact of their product selections.

‍

Designing for efficient air distribution

Environmental performance is not simply a question of which materials are used. How a ventilation system performs throughout its working life is equally important.

Textile-based ventilation allows air distribution to be tailored to the specific requirements of a space, whether that is an office, school, sports hall or industrial facility.

By selecting the appropriate air distribution principle and designing the system around the room's requirements, engineers can deliver effective ventilation while considering pressure losses, air movement and occupant comfort.

A properly designed system should achieve the required indoor conditions without unnecessary energy consumption.

The actual energy performance will depend on the complete ventilation design, including airflow rates, pressure losses, controls and the wider HVAC installation.

Considering these factors early in the design process can help create buildings that are both comfortable and efficient to operate.

‍

Sustainability beyond installation

Creating buildings that are ready for the future also means considering what happens after construction is complete.

Ventilation systems require appropriate inspection and maintenance throughout their working lives to ensure they continue performing as intended.

Textile ducting can be removed and washed, allowing accumulated contamination to be addressed and helping to maintain the material's air permeability.

Planning maintenance access and selecting materials suitable for the application can help prolong system life and maintain performance.

This whole-life approach is an important part of sustainable building design. A system that is correctly specified, properly maintained and designed for longevity can offer benefits extending well beyond the initial installation.

‍

Turning sustainability commitments into practical decisions

World Green Building Week 2026 highlighted that creating more sustainable buildings requires action at every stage, from initial design through to operation and eventual replacement.

For mechanical consultants and contractors, this means considering environmental documentation alongside technical performance, selecting systems appropriate to each application and ensuring maintenance requirements are addressed from the outset.

At KE Fibertec, we are committed to supporting these decisions through technical expertise, tailored textile ventilation solutions and transparent environmental documentation.

By working together and making informed decisions today, we can help create buildings that are better prepared for tomorrow.
